On Sunday 1st February our service explored Music in Worship. The theme for the service was prompted by the fact that our Church Organist was celebrating 50 years of making music in our Church.
The service was led by Rev. Geoffrey Scarlett, who frequently has collaborated with Stuart Harding (The organist in question) on writing Hymns and songs for Worship over the last few years.
The service started with the Reading together of Psalm 98 “Oh sing to the Lord a new song”; later on we did just that. We sang The Gift of Music” with Lyrics by Geoffrey and the Music by Stuart .
Stuart had chosen the Hymns for the service which were:-
- “Meet and right it is to sing”
- “For the Music of Creation”
- “Take this moment, sign, and space”
- “When in our music, God is Glorified”
The Choir sang an Anthem “Just as I am” which was written by Charlotte Elliot in 1834. It was good to see some old friends who had moved away from the area back singing in the choir for the occasion.
During the service a speech was made by Jennie, the Senior Steward, detailing Stuarts Musical life in the Church over the years, and he was presented with a framed certificate and an engraved paperweight.
After the service the celebrations continued as sixty four people sat down to Lunch together, with Tarragon Chicken to start then various sweets and a celebratory cake.
Our thanks to everyone who made this occasion possible.
We all look forward to many more years of exceptional musicmaking in the church.
